This mouse test checks every button (left, right, middle, back, forward), the scroll wheel, and the timing data that tells you how the mouse will feel under your hand. Polling rate is the number of position updates per second — office mice deliver 125 Hz, gaming mice 1000 Hz or more. CPS measures clicks per second over a 10-second window. Double-click time is the gap the OS still treats as a single double — long gaps usually mean a worn switch.
Common mouse faults
- One click registering as two — switch is failing (debounce defect).
- Wheel scroll skipping or reversing — encoder dust or worn detents.
- Cursor jitter — surface or sensor issue, not the buttons.
- Side buttons inactive — driver software not installed, or the buttons aren't mapped.
Frequently asked questions
My polling rate reads 500 Hz but the mouse is rated 1000 Hz.
The browser samples movement at the refresh rate of the page. With a 60 Hz display you'll usually see capped values; on a 120 Hz+ monitor with a high-end mouse you'll see numbers closer to the spec.
What CPS counts as good?
6–8 CPS is normal, 10+ is fast, 14+ usually involves jitter clicking — not what most games consider "fair".
Why is my double-click being read as a single click?
Either the OS double-click interval is too short or the switch is starting to fail and one of the two clicks isn't being reported. A mouse that double-fires inconsistently is on its way out.
Does the mouse test work for trackpads?
Buttons and scroll work; polling rate readings will be limited because trackpads report at lower fixed rates. The mouse test is most accurate with a real pointing-device mouse.
